"Pest Management" is a very wide term to denote the subject - since Pests are of innumerable varieties and are causing damages to both human beings at home and to crops at the fields.
The eradication of these pests and insects as well as control is identified as "Pest Management".
It has far-reaching implications in addressing issues relating to health, environment and economics through science-based technologies.
Pest Management at home It is common knowledge that how our homes become birthplaces of pests and insects like - cockroaches; bed bugs; flies; mosquitoes; termites; weather warms and ants - to name a few, if only we do not take appropriate pest control measures.
And there are so many varieties of them as well, each causing or capable of producing a lot of diseases to family members.
Varieties of pests and insects found at home: For example cockroaches are of different varieties - American cockroaches; Oriental cockroaches; Brownbanded cockroaches etc.
- and cockroaches are directly linked to causing asthma and allergic diseases for many people.
Another most common pest in the stinging category is mosquito.
It can multiply in numbers very quickly, since it takes only 10 to 14 days for it to grow from egg to adult.
Amazingly the female mosquitoes sucking our blood can fly up to 14 miles for feasting a blood meal.
Mosquitoes cause diseases like West Nile virus; malaria and most dreaded dengue fever.
Termites are the most deadly enemies at home, as they can silently eat away wooden articles.
Subterranean termites; Drywood termites; Dampwood termites; and Formosan termites are the varieties in these pest families, capable to collapse an entire home constructed of wood.
Pests destroying agricultural fields and farms: The pests and insects destroying agricultural crops are innumerable.
Scientists have identified 100 most invasive species of pests invading agricultural crops globally.
Of them the most deadly ones are - Flee Beetle: Flying in large numbers they can completely destroy farms of canola; cauliflower; potatoes; tomatoes and sugar beets.
Integrated Pest Management: Overall, governments of all countries are spending millions of dollars to fight against pests and insects destroying agricultural crops every year.
In the US the "Integrated Pest Management" program includes - Biological control; Farm Financial Management; Invasive Species Information; Precision, Geospatial & Sensor Technologies; Sustainable Agriculture; Ecosystems etc.
Education on Pest Management: The National Institute of Food and Agriculture, under the control of United States Department of Agriculture is extending generous grants for researches in Universities and non-profit organizations to educate people on "Integrated Pest Management".
These researches are carried out and results recorded for the information of one and all under the heads - Agricultural Systems; Pest Management; Biotechnology and Genomics; Organic Agriculture; Environment and Natural Resources; and Nanotechnology etc.
The concerted efforts of Governments as well as people at large on Pest Management is an ongoing process, to fight against pests causing nuisance, loss of money and infection or spreading of diseases.
