Caffeine Withdrawal & Muscle Pain

    History

    • Caffeine has been used by humans since the Stone Age. Legend states that caffeine use began when a few tea leaves accidentally fell into boiling water.

    Significance

    • According to a review of research by Johns Hopkins University, up to 90 percent of adults use caffeine daily. Withdrawal symptoms can occur within 12 to 24 hours after stopping use. Even small amounts of caffeine use will cause withdrawal symptoms.

    Symptoms

    • Withdrawal symptoms can be severe, with some individuals feeling like they have the flu, including nausea and muscle pain. Other symptoms include fatigue, headaches and irritability.

    Solution

    • To avoid most of the withdrawal symptoms, you must cut caffeine use very slowly. Start with trying to cut use by just 1/2 a cup a day.

    Warning

    • Extreme doses of caffeine can be dangerous. Ten grams or more of caffeine may cause seizures and respiratory failure that can lead to death.
