Get the Look of Designer Diaper Bags for Less

Updated September 16, 2015.

Designer diaper bags can be fashionable, flashy, or forever classic. However, with some costing several hundred dollars, not everyone can afford them. So if you are looking for a chic, but affordable diaper bag that doesn't have you looking like an old mother hen, check out this list of suggestions of great looking diaper bags that have some similarities to high-end diaper bags without as high a price tag.

Instead of the Timi & Leslie Annette in Rouge

For the mom who loves to bring color into her wardrobe, she might fall in love with this Timi & Leslie Annette Diaper Bag in rouge. A pop of color, this is a bag that will get you noticed, and for good reasons. It doesn't scream "mom with a diaper bag coming through", but rather seems like a bold, beautiful hand bag.

Timi and Leslie bags offer plenty of thoughtful details: matching clutch, stroller straps, plenty of pockets, and all set off with the custom hardware in antique brass finish. Measuring 15”H x 11.5”W x 8.25”D, this is a roomy accessory that can certainly enhance your wardrobe. The question is, do you want to pay the price?

Try JJ Cole Technique Diaper Bag in Red

The JJ Cole Technique Diaper Bag is a great alternative to the Timi & Leslie Annette, and, depending on where you shop, can save you roughly $60. Like the Annette, the Techique bag has stroller straps, changing pad, matching wallet, and pacifier pod. It has a total of 8 organizing pockets (the Annette has 10), and a wide magnetic strip closure.

If red isn't your color, you can opt for 3 different solids or 2 prints to suit your own style and taste preference. You do need to take note that the Technique is slightly bigger than Annette, measuring 12"H X 19"W X 6.5"D. JJ Cole offers many comparable features in this bag, and you'll likely be pleased with both its functionality and its appearance.More »

Instead of the Petunia Pickle Bottom Shoulder Bag

I adore Petunia Pickle Bottom bags. I love the luxurious fabrics, like brocades and silks, and the attention to detail. Their medium sized shoulder bags are the perfect size for short day trips away from home; not too big, but not too small either. It has a great messenger-style shoulder strap, somewhat wide. Additionally, it has a built-in changing station with detachable changing pad. It is made with 2 interior pockets, one exterior pacifier pocket, and a total of 4 bottle pockets. All in all, it is a wonderful diaper bag. However, at upwards of $180, it may be more than you are willing to spend.

Try Bumble Bags Jessica Messenger

There are so many similarities between the design of the Bumble Bags Jessica Messenger Tote (read review) and the Petunia Pickle Bottom Shoulder Bag. The bags are comparable in size with a similar number of interior pockets.  The Jessica also has the built-in detachable changing station (love it!), all wrapped up in a colorful print tote.

Where the Bumble Bag Jessica stands out is its versatility. The shoulder strap may not be as elegant, it can covert from a messenger bag to a backpack to a stroller bag. Pretty cool, if you ask me. The big "however" here, is that though the print is lovely, it is not nearly as luxurious as the brocade fabric of Petunia Pickle Bottom and your savings may not be that extreme.More »

Instead of Mia Bossi Katie Brownie Diaper Bag

Mia Bossi makes unbelievably stylish diaper bags. Those done in leather seem to attact the most attention. Katie is a bit different; a fabulous lightweight diaper bag measuring 10"H X15.5"W X 6.5"D. Made with nylon and trimmed with faux patent leather, the bag has an understated elegance. With plenty of features, like a removable liner, a total of 4 bottle holders, several holders for diapers, wipes and keys, and a separate zippered compartment, it makes for a great bag that does not weigh you down. And let's not forget the machine washable faux fur changing pad!

Though the Mia Bossi Katie is lightweight, it is not light on your wallet. So if you are looking to keep costs down, you will want to look else where.

Try Fisher Price Fastfinder Deluxe Diaper Tote in Brown

Well, if you opt for the Fisher Price Fastfinder Deluxe you will sacrifice the faux fur changing pad on the altar of parenting frugally. I know, I know, tough call. But if I tell you that you'll likely save $140, maybe that will make it easier.

The Fastfinder Deluxe Diaper Tote is just a scootch bigger than Mia Bossi Katie, and personally, I think it has some more features that make this bag worth a closer look. For one, it's got this "easy-access" wipes pouch. One side of the bag has a baby wipe case that makes retrieving wipes simple an easy. The opposite side is flanked by a bottle pouch big enough for 2 bottles. Designed with several pockets, the diaper bag is made from faux leather and wipes clean easily. A great bag for the money.More »

Instead of the Nest Canvas Diaper Bag

If money were no object, I might just find a Nest Canvas Diaper Bag to bring home. I find it to have a timeless classic appeal. The 13” H x 15.5” W x 7” D canvas bag is charmingly finished off with patent leather details and classy hardware. It is a diaper bag that will look great with practically any look.

The bag features 3 zippered pockets and 2 divider pockets, key chain holder, magnetic closure, metal bottom feet to prevent scuffing, and stroller straps. A zip out lining can be removed completely when you no longer have need of a diaper bag and converts to a very durable handbag. However, for me, money does come into the equation, and so I would need to find a (cheaper) alternative.

Try the Eddie Bauer Heritage Tote

Ok, so it doesn't have the black patent lather edging. I'll give you that. But this canvas diaper bag is exceptionally durable with many wonderful features and offers a somewhat comparable look to the Nest Canvas Diaper Bag.

Here's the skinny on the Eddie Bauer Heritage Tote. Measuring up at 16"H X 15"W X 5"D,  it is very similar in size. It also has an exterior side pocket, several compartments, a back pocket, 2 bottle pockets, and a fixed shoulder strap. Parents who have reviewed this diaper bag note is durability and roominess. In the end, this swap could save you roughly $180. Definitely worth considering.More »

Instead of the Not Rational Hansel Diaper Bag in Brandy

The Hansel seems to be one of the hottest picks among celebrity moms, and with its acclaimed status comes a staggering price tag. Selling for nearly $600, I would go so far to say that it isn't a bag that the general public carries.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great bag. Likely the cost comes from the fact that the bag (and the changing pad!) are made from soft Italian leather and has antique brass hardware. But other than that, it seems to me that it is just your basic diaper bag. It measures 13"H x 20"W X 6"D and has 4 pockets. Would you pay the price for this designer diaper bag?

Try Merona Satchel

If you don't want to shell out $600 for Hansel, you will likely need to make some sacrifices in function to get a similar look. To make it easier, find clever ways to convert a handbag into a diaper bag. One bag that I might suggest could be swapped out for the Hansel is the Merona Signature Satchel. You can save about $570 on this bag, and still get a very fashionable look.

The Merona Satchel is comparable in size. It comes in a few different looks, some have front pockets, others don't. There are classy prints versus calm solids. Mostly all are done in a faux leather. Like the Hansel, it does have double straps to securely carry on your shoulder, and a few inside pockets. Shown pictured: Satchel in Cognac.More »
