- 1). Take the buffalo skull outdoors. Scrub the skull clean, using a degreasing cleanser. Use steel wool to loosen any dirt from the bone and avoid adhesion problems.
- 2). Rinse the skull using a water hose. Leave no residues behind, or the base won't stick. Let the skull dry under the sun for about any hour.
- 3). Abrade the buffalo horns if you plan to paint them. Sand each horn until it feels rough all over.
- 4). Place the skull on a drop cloth. Cover the horns with painter's tape if you don't plan to paint them.
- 5). Coat the buffalo skull with acrylic primer using a 2-inch polyester paintbrush. Avoid brushes equipped with nylon bristles; these sometimes leave ugly marks in the finish. Let the skull dry for two hours.
- 6). Wash the acrylic base from your brush using fresh water.
- 7). Coat the buffalo skull with acrylic enamel using the 2-inch polyester paintbrush. You may also use a latex paint; however, the finish won't remain nearly as durable. Let the skull dry for two hours.
