To keep your blades sharp, do not use any fabric or embroidery scissor on paper as this dulls the blades.
1. Fabric Shears
Fabric shears, like these from Fiskars, have long blades and are used to cut your embroidery fabric to size.
2. Embroidery Scissors
Embroidery scissors are small, sharp scissors used to cut embroidery thread. They come in a wide range of styles and finishes and can be very collectible!
3. Thread Cutters
Thread cutters are medallions with a protected blade encased in a ridged metal casing. Cut the thread by running the fiber along the blade in the open ridges.
These can be worn on a ribbon around the neck, or place one on a retractable keeper and clip it to your clothing. They are handy to wear when working embroidery because you'll never have to fish around your work basket for scissors.
Thread cutters are especially handy when travelling. Many airport security agents still confiscate scissors of any size. I take these with me regularly and have never been asked to surrender a thread cutter.
4. Machine Embroidery Scissors
Machine embroidery scissors are used when working machine embroidery. They have a curved blade, which makes it easier to cut the thread close to the fabric surface while in a machine embroidery hoop.
5. Pinking Shears
Pinking shears like these from Mundial have long, serrated sawtooth blades like teeth, and are often used to cut embroidery fabric. The zig-zag edge produced when using these scissors helps deter fraying.
