- 1). Take a seasickness supplement before you board a boat. Different manufacturers offer different guidance, so read this and set yourself reminders to take the medication as advised. If your seasickness is very bad, speak to your doctor about your symptoms. There are prescription only medications which can effectively combat seasickness, and make the cruise more enjoyable.
- 2). Check out homeopathic remedies, such as pressure point bracelets. These are hugely successful for some people. Talk to a pharmacist about trying these options along with with prescribed medication, to prevent clashes.
- 3). Take ginger on board. Ginger root and ginger gum are popular choices, and spiced ginger is often available in buffets. Ginger ale does not actually contain ginger, so this is not effective. Ginger is a natural way to prevent seasickness.
- 4). Eat in moderation. While you do not need to avoid any foods in particular, make sure you do not overeat. Overeating is likely to cause a nauseous feeling, which can make you more susceptible to seasickness.
- 5). Avoid anything alcoholic. Alcohol can make you feel dizzy and disorientated, and drinking too much can cause vomiting. Avoiding alcohol completely is the best way to avoid these extra symptoms, which again may make you more susceptible to seasickness.
- 6). Choose your accommodation carefully. Tell the holiday company that you often suffer from symptoms of seasickness, and request a low level cabin near the middle of the ship. This is less likely to feel movement that outer cabins.
- 7). Spend your time on the deck, looking at the horizon. You don't need to stare at the horizon, but have this central to your view. This helps your brain to balance you, and prevents the vertigo and nauseas feelings.
- 8). Avoid other people who are suffering. Hearing others discuss their symptoms or seeing people throw up or act disorientated can make your own symptoms much worse. Once you have taken medication and have positioned yourself well, try to ignore the symptoms as much as possible.
- 9). Do not attempt to read, use a computer or work while on a cruise ship. Concentrating on something while you are moving will make symptoms much worse. Instead, watch the horizon, or listen to audio books.
