- 1). Examine your boards for rough areas. Sand the edges or flat surfaces smooth, if necessary, to avoid splinters or damage to the books. Cover the boards with self-adhesive shelf liner following the manufacturer's instructions, if desired.
- 2). Lay a board on the floor where you intend to place the bookshelf. Place milk crates or cement blocks on top of the board no more than 10 to 15 inches in from each end. Position the supports with the opening facing toward you for added storage when using milk crates.
- 3). Lay a second board on top of the supports. Press down on the center of the board, and add support under the middle if the board bends under the pressure. Remember that books are heavy and your boards may need additional reinforcement to support the weight.
- 4). Stack additional supports on the second board directly above the lower supports. Place a third board atop the supports to create the top shelf.
