Making a Live Mask

A great deal of thought, time, and effort
are used when making a mask.

Masks can be made molded with the use of a variety of materials. Here are the most common:
• Plaster
• Latex
• Silicone
• Leather

Things to Consider
• Size of mask – determine if you will be creating a whole face or partial face
• Design – use pictures, sketches, or other ideas to plan the design you will create
• Number of masks needed – decide how many masks will be made to ensure you have
the correct amount of supplies and work space
• Colors – determine what paints are needed to produce the look you have envisioned
• Time – determine how much time is needed to complete the mask and if you are able to
devote the time it takes
• Where – whether a studio, garage, basement, or other location, it is important to decide
where you will be making the mask
• Safety – be sure to consider safety precautions to protect the work area, mask, your
clothing and your skin

Preparation
Preparation includes purchasing and gathering the materials needed, cleaning the surface you will be working on (including the table and the face being used for the mold), and prepping the work area for molding and casting. You will need to plan on a large work area to make certain there is room to make the mold, sculpt, pour, and paint. It is also important to prepare enough time to complete all the tasks involved in making the mask.

Making a Live Mask
A general idea of the steps taken to make a live mask with latex include: creating a mold,
pouring the latex, allowing the latex to cure, pulling the mask from the mold, painting the mask (often done with an airbrush), and enjoying the mask. Though this may sound simple, making a mask takes time, patience, and practice.

There are many ways to make a live mask, especially depending on the materials you use.
Researching and experimenting with different techniques and methods may help you find the process that works best for you and provides you with the results you are hoping to achieve. Some people choose to make a few molds and practice with them before creating the final product. This can save time and help ensure you have success when making your mask.
