- 1). Write down the family's information. Start with the first generation of your genogram, and work your way up to the most current generation. Note marriages, deaths, and births. Add each name on a separate line with that person's information.
- 2). Draw shapes for the first generation. Use a compass to create circles for females and a ruler to create squares for males. The size of each square and circle depends on the amount of people in your genogram and the information for each person.
- 3). Add the second generation by attaching them to their parents. Add their spouses to the side of them with a line connecting them laterally.
- 4). Continue adding the following generations and adding information, spouses and children.
- 5). Add each person's birth date in their circle or square. Draw an "X" over any square or circle that represents someone who has died, and include the date of death.
- 6). Add any known medical problems for each person, and causes of death for each deceased person.
- 7). Record divorces by placing a slash-mark on the line between married people.
- 8). Go over your pencil marks with permanent marker once you have finished your genogram.
