Does Wimax Spell Change For Cyberspace?

Its a fact that WiMax is a huge step forward in network speed, power, and efficiency. And its a fact that it broadens the computing capability of its users. It provides better speed, higher mobility, and broader range. And yet, it is not all that different from Wi-Fi. In essence, its simply a more powerful version, hence the 4G nomenclature. So as it catches on, are we going to see any fundamental changes in the ways we use the internet? Or will it simply be a better way to do the same things?

The answer probably lies somewhere in between. Yes, WiMAX is mostly an improvement in function, and the essential form remains the same. It is matter of degrees. Wi-Fi and 3G have allowed us to access the internet from our homes, offices, and most of the time, wherever else we happen to be. It has allowed us to check our email, play games, download files, and an infinite number of other things. The internet is vast, and it remains the same with the coming of this new standard. It will allow the same things. Sadly you will not be able to use it for teleportation (5G perhaps?). What this new network does is provide the same internet faster, more reliably, and in more places.
Thats it, in a nutshell.

So what makes it worthwhile? Well, as mentioned before, it really is a matter of degrees, but in this case, many, many degrees. The key difference between the two networks is that while Wi-Fi routers have a relatively small signal radius, with WiMAX its huge.
Coverage extends for miles instead of yards, making it a perfect network for both computers and mobile devices like smartphones. In the next few years, dont be surprised if you start to see major cities outfitted with municipal 4G networks.

Of course, when you can broadcast a strong signal with that sort of range, wires are unnecessary. This is great news for people living in rural areas where geographical isolation has made it expensive or impossible to connect their homes in the past.

Similarly, with that sort of range, even city-dwellers will find themselves happily able to connect to the same wireless connection in their apartment or at the park. The new standard will create a seamless experience that was lacking with 3G or Wi-Fi. And of course, if youre looking for a place to set up your laptop, and the signal covers the city like a blanket, therell be no need to reluctantly head into a coffee shop when you dont want coffee just internet.

And of course, theres the speed. What would be the point of a new standard if it didnt offer increased bandwidth? Providers are claiming speeds up to 4 times that of Wi-Fi or 3G. This requires no explanation, no analysis. Speed is speed, and we can all appreciate it. So, while were not looking at the difference between the wheel and space travel here, the improvements are significant and exciting. Who knows where well go from here?
