- 1). Select an application method. You may apply for temporary tags online or by fax. Online applications require an account number. If you do not have an online account number, you must email the Department of Transportation and request one. Alternatively, you may complete and fax Form 1710, Temporary Registration Facsimile Application, to 512-465-3565.
- 2). Provide your name, address and phone number and payment information for the tag fee.
- 3). Select the type of temporary registration you want. You may choose a one-trip temporary tag, a 72-hour (three-day), or a 144-hour (six-day) temporary tag. Include the day and time you intend to begin your tag time.
- 4). Provide information on your vehicle. Include the make, model and vehicle identification number. You must provide a valid VIN to receive temporary Texas tags.
- 5). Submit your registration application with proof of liability insurance for the vehicle.
