- Vertical freestanding toilet paper holders usually consist of a pole attached to a stand, but they can have a small cabinet base. These holders store several replacement rolls in either a closed cabinet base, or rolls simply slide down the pole. A vertical pole can be as simple as the handle of a bathroom plunger, or as intricate as a carved wooden cabinet with a hook at the top to hold and dispense the top roll of paper.
- A recessed toilet paper holder fits inside a recessed area in the wall. The holder itself is typically a one-roll standard holder, but the recessed area gives the treatment a finished look and helps to hide the roll. The paper on the roll might sink completely into the wall, or only the holder is recessed, leaving the paper sticking out of the wall.
- Commercial toilet paper holders are stronger and more secure than those used in homes. These toilet paper holders are designed to prevent theft of the paper and typically hold one to three rolls of paper at one time to limit the number of times the roll must be changed during the day. These toilet paper holders are the preference of businesses and public restroom servicers.
- Wall-mounted toilet paper holders attach to the wall with simple brackets. These holders are available in a wide variety of finishes and designs to match the bathroom decor. Either closed on both sides with a spring-loaded center for loading the tissue, or open on one side to allow the tissue to easily slip in place, wall-mounted holders are the most common choice of homeowners.
