- 1). Place the safety glasses over your eyes whenever performing any type of battery maintenance. Small particles can emit from the steel brush, and small pieces of white corrosion can become airborne.
- 2). Remove the negative (-) terminal from the top of the battery terminal posts. Loosen the clamp bolt with the 1/2-inch end wrench. Pull the terminal connector free from the battery and lay it to the side.
- 3). Loosen the clamp on the positive (+) terminal post and remove it. Set the connector to the side.
- 4). Clean the lead battery posts with the steel brush. The posts must be a bright metallic color.
- 5). Scrape out the inside of the terminal post connectors with the pocket knife blade. The soft lead will peel away to reveal a bright metallic color.
- 6). Apply a thin coating of corrosion inhibitor to the battery posts.
- 7). Replace the battery cable connectors back onto the battery terminal posts. Secure the positive cable first. Attach the negative cable. Tighten both bolt clamps with the end wrench.
- 8). Smear a thin coating of corrosion inhibitor over the cable connector.
- 9). Open the caps to access the individual battery cells (on non-SLA type batteries only). Check the level of fluid in each cell. Add distilled water to raise the level of the fluid to the lower plastic ring in each cell. Replace the caps.
