- 1). Open Microsoft Word and start typing in your document. When you reach the place where you need a chemistry symbol, stop typing.
- 2). Click on the Windows “Start” button.
- 3). Type “Character Map” in the “search files and programs” bar, located at the bottom of the Start menu.
- 4). Click on the “Character Map” icon to open the program in a new window. (see References 1)
- 5). Click “Advanced,” and then type the chemistry symbol’s name in the “Search for” box. If you don’t know the symbol’s name, you can scroll the entire Character Map to locate it by sight.
- 6). Click on the symbol, and click the “Select” button.
- 7). Click on your Word document again, making it the active window.
- 8). Right-click at the place in the document where you want to insert the chemistry notation, and select “Paste.” The symbol appears in your Word document immediately.
