How to Check the Transfer Case Fluid on a 2006 Titan

    • 1). Drive the Titan's two front wheels onto the ramps. Park the vehicle and turn off its ignition. Place wheel chocks in front of and behind the left rear tire to prevent the Nissan from rolling off the ramps.

    • 2). Slide under the Titan's front end with the socket wrench, Allen socket and a rag. Remove the transfer case's fill plug with the socket wrench and Allen socket. The drain plug is the lower plug, the fill plug is the higher plug -- do not remove the drain plug.

    • 3). Insert the tip of your index finger into the fill hole and get a sample of the fluid on your finger. Pull your finger out and examine the fluid condition and smell. If you can't reach the fluid, the fluid smells burned or if fluid is discolored, you need to perform a transfer case service.

    • 4). Reinstall the fill plug with the socket wrench and Allen socket. Move the wheel chocks before driving the Titan off the ramps.
