How to Get Tier 1 Benefits in Massachusetts

    • 1). Call the Massachusetts Office of Labor and Workforce at 888-988-8418. Ask to speak with an unemployment counselor. Verify your status regarding unemployment benefits. Be ready to provide your name, contact information, Social Security number and previous employment history.

    • 2). Inquire about automatic enrollment into the Tier 1 EUC extension. Tell the unemployment counselor that you have exhausted your unemployment benefits and would like to be considered for a Tier 1 extension. The counselor should be able to look up your account to verify that you have exhausted your unemployment benefits. According to the Massachusetts Office of Labor and Workforce, you are eligible for Tier 1 EUC if your benefits are exhausted on or before Dec. 24, 2011.

    • 3). Wait for confirmation that you will receive Tier 1 benefits. In the event that your benefits are denied, the unemployment office will send you documentation stating that your benefits will cease. Contact a local Legal Aid office for assistance in appealing the decision of the unemployment office.
