Dogs And Some Not So Obvious Household Dangers

In general dogs are not picky eaters.
It is not recommended that we give our dogs people food but many of us do.
Overall the food we eat is safe for animals but there are some foods and other things around the house that can make our dogs very ill and could kill them.
Dogs are a lot like children and they depend on us to take care of their needs.
Being like children they are naturally curious and can get into some dangerous situations.
Learn all you can and protect your dog from household dangers.
This list is not a complete list of all the household dangers your pet may face but they are common ones.
1.
Giving a dog chocolate can cause diarrhea and in some cases, death.
Some chocolates are more dangerous than others with baker's chocolate being the most dangerous.
Poisoning symptoms will appear with hours of ingesting chocolate.
If you discover your dog has eaten chocolate call your vet or poison control center immediately.
2.
Feeding your dog large amounts of fish can result in vitamin deficiencies that will result in loss of appetite, seizures and possibly death.
3.
The kidneys can be damaged if your dog eats grapes or raisins.
4.
Milk and other dairy products given in large amounts can cause diarrhea in both cats and dogs.
5.
It has been said that giving your dog raw eggs will give him a nice shiny coat but, the opposite is true.
Raw eggs may contain salmonella and has enzymes that decrease the dog's ability to absorb some vitamins that can lead to skin and hair problems.
6.
Foods that are high in sugar can lead to obesity, cause dental problems and could cause diabetes.
7.
Some chemicals in onions, garlic and mushrooms can turn to poison in your dogs digestive system quickly.
8.
Cat food is very high in protein and fats and could lead to pancreatitis in dogs.
9.
Small bones from chicken and turkey will splinter easily and could puncture the intestines or stomach of your dog.
10.
Antifreeze smells and tastes sweet to your dog but it kills very quickly.
Check to make sure your car is not leaking any in the driveway and do not leave any where your pet might be able to get to it.
11.
Tylenol can be lethal especially to small dogs.
12.
Batteries can kill a dog within 12 hours.
Watch batteries and similar ones can be easily digested by your pet, never leave them where your dog might have access to them.
13.
Keep moth balls, mice poison and all detergents and fabric softeners away from your dog.
14.
There are also some houseplants that are toxic to dogs.
It is important that we protect our pets as much as we can from the many dangers they face every day.
Don't let your dog run lose, have them spayed or neutered and contact your veterinarian right away if you think your dog has eaten something that might be dangerous.
