- 1). Gather coupons. These can be found from a number of sources, including the local Sunday newspaper and many websites. Have the person you are teaching go through the newspaper to cut out any coupons she may be interested in. Also introduce her to free coupon websites and have her print coupons from there.
- 2). Gather weekly store advertisements. These will be useful to see what deals stores are offering that week. The person you are teaching to use coupons should consider looking through store ads where he frequently shops and for stores he seldom visits. You never know what one store may have on sale that week that he could use.
- 3). Compare the coupons to the ads and compile a shopping list. Have the person you are instructing thumb through the ads and use the pencil to circle or mark items she would like to buy. If there is a corresponding coupon, have the person write the price and quantity on the ad. If the coupon is for $1 off for buying two items, write "$1/2." Some prefer to use the store ads as shopping lists for each store. If the person you are teaching would prefer, she can write out a shopping list on the notepad.
- 4). Organize the coupons in categories that will be easy to use. Your learner may choose broad categories, such as "health and beauty" or "cleaning," or more specific ones, like "canned food" or "condiments."
- 5). Take the person shopping so he can become comfortable using the coupons and ads. For the best deals, help him compare coupons to items he needs.
