- 1). Wash the automobile. Fill a bucket with warm water and one capful of a car washing soap. Use a sponge to wash the car. Scrub the area where the traded paint is located. Scrubbing vigorously may remove the traded paint. Rinse the soap residue off of the car with a hose. If the traded paint is still present, proceed to the next step.
- 2). Dip a rag in the soapy water. Rub the towel over the traded paint. Rub the traded paint with a clay bar. A clay bar is slightly abrasive, but generally safe for most exterior car paints. Do not allow the surface where the clay bar is being used to dry out. Continue dampening the surface as needed and then rubbing with the clay bar. Remove the soap residue using a cloth or rag dampened in water. If the traded paint is still present, proceed to the next step.
- 3). Apply a tar and road oil remover to a cotton cloth. Rub the remover into the traded paint. Wipe the remover away with a water-dampened cotton cloth after one to two minutes. Do not allow the product to dry on the car. Continue this process until the traded paint is completely removed. Be aware that a tar and road oil product may discolor paint finishes.
