How to Remove a Crankshaft Pulley on a 96 VW Jetta

    • 1). Lift the front of the car with a jack and position the Jetta onto safety stands.

    • 2). Unfasten and remove the bolts which secure the wheel well splash shield in place with a wrench to gain access to the pulley from underneath the car.

    • 3). Loosen the belt tensioner bolt from the center of the tensioner pulley with a socket wrench, then pull the belt away from the crankshaft pulley. The tensioner pulley is the engine's smallest pulley.

    • 4). Remove the bolts from the face of the pulley with a hex wrench, sometimes referred to as an Allen wrench.

    • 5). Slide the pulley off the crankshaft.
