If you ever find yourself in a situation where you needed to tow a car or a trailer holding things that are precious to you, you'll want to make absolutely certain that you tow your load in the most reliable manner possible, for both you and for your car. If you are planning to use a rope to tow your car, there are a number of things that need to be kept in mind before you start your towing. With just a little bit of research on your part, you will learn exactly what to do and how to keep from harming your car or anyone else. One of the most essential things you must know when towing a vehicle or trailer is that you must only attach the rope to solid metal that can handle the rope's pull, and never attach it to anything else at any point time. A really good example of what you must never attach the rope to is your vehicle bumper. Vehicles simply are not made this way anymore, and while that bumper looks firmly connected, if you try to tow something by strapping a rope or chain onto the bumper you are going to pull it right off the frame of your car.
The first thing you need to do is to make sure you look for the mounting point meant for towing that can be found on the rear end of the vehicle that will be doing the towing. If you cannot find it, try looking towards where the bumper is mounted on, and go from there. An extremely wise decision is to install a trailer hitch if you are experienced with this sort of installation, or have a company who sells them do it, as trailer hitches come with a way to mount a tow rope. Keep in mind, you want to be just as careful with the vehicle that is pulling the car as you are with the car being towed - it wouldn't do anyone any good if the pulling vehicle was the one damaged in the process!
The next step is attaching the tow strap to the automobile that you are going to be pulling. It bears repeating again that you have to remember to not attach the rope to any section of the car that isn't attached in a way that can handle the pull while towing. You should find a heavy-duty steel hook underneath where the bumper is mounted that is meant for attaching the hook. If you cannot find yours, go ahead and check your owner's manual for more information. The owner's manual will have a diagram that will show you exactly where it is located.
Finally, you will need to work out the logistics of the actual towing. First, you don't ever want to pull a vehicle that doesn't have someone inside of it. This is to prevent possible damages or injuries brought on if your tow cable were to come lose for some reason. If a person was in the vehicle they could hit the brakes or steer if they were required to, but if it is not manned then you have an empty vehicle traveling by itself, and the dangers here are obvious. Second, never ever go the full speed limit if you are towing a vehicle on the highway. You will definitely get to where you are going soon enough, and no one's life is worth your wanting to get to your destination quickly. Keep it slow and keep it safe and you will be pleased you did so in the long run. Lastly, remember not to make any unexpected movements and to just play it smooth.
