- 1). Place a sheet of paper on a bulletin board or any surface on which you can mount pushpins.
- 2). Push the two pins into the drawing surface at the positions desired for the focus points.
- 3). Tie a length of string into a loop. Place the loop around the two pushpins.
- 4). Place the pencil within the string loop. Pull the string taut, forming a triangle of string with the pins and the pencil at each point.
- 5). Move the pencil around the focus pins while maintaining the tension on the string. The pencil point will draw an ellipse on the paper.
