How to Replace the Starter Pulley on a Weed Eater

    • 1). Move the Weed Eater "On/Stop" switch to the "Stop" position. Pull the rubber boot straight off the spark plug. Disconnect the throttle cable from the carburetor by pinching the housing clasps on the cable's tip, at the point it connects to the carburetor, with the needle-nosed pliers.

    • 2). Unscrew the rear trigger handle's cover with the screwdriver. Pop the handle cover from the shaft using the tip of the screwdriver. Unscrew the four screws in the front of the engine, holding the boom assembly to the engine housing. Slide the front engine cover away and pull the boom assembly from the engine.

    • 3). Unscrew the starter recoil assembly from the flywheel. The screw will be located on the underside of the pulley. Slide the starter recoil assembly off the flywheel. Unscrew the pulley from the starter post, sliding the pulley and washer off the starter recoil assembly cover.

    • 4). Pull out 10 inches of the starter rope and twist a loop into the 10 inches. Insert the loop's intersection point into the notch on the pulley. Hold the pulley and rotate the loop back and forth until the recoil spring disconnects from the end of the rope. Let go of the pulley and let it unwind slowly.

    • 5). Unwind the starter rope and cut it free from the pulley. Spread a fingertip's worth of engine grease onto the starter post. Thread the starter rope into the replacement pulley, tying a knot in the end to fasten the rope to the pulley. Guide the starter rope through the access hole on the starter cover and through the end of the starter handle. Tie another knot into the end to secure the rope to the starter handle.

    • 6). Twist the rope around the pulley in a clockwise direction. Place the washer onto the starter post and set the pulley on top. Tighten the screw to fasten the pulley to the cover. Tension the recoil spring by withdrawing 10 inches of rope, looping the rope and twisting the loop back and forth until the spring hooks onto the rope.

    • 7). Hold the starter assembly cover and twist the loop and pulley five times to set the tension. Let go of the rope and allow it to wind fully onto the pulley. Set the starter recoil assembly onto the flywheel, tightening the screw to anchor it in place. Set the engine cover back over the starter recoil and tighten the four screws.

    • 8). Push the boom assembly into the front of the engine. Refit the rear handle cover and tighten the screws. Slide the throttle cable back into the carburetor.
