How to Home School in South Carolina

Join Any Association for Home Schools with 50 or More Members

    • 1). Review the list of home school organizations on the South Carolina Home Educators Association website (see Resources).

    • 2). Join the organization of your choice. The group must have more than 50 members, per South Carolina Department of Education requirements. An annual membership fee ranges in cost from group to group. Groups generally provide grade-specific curricula that encompasses the state-mandated subject areas, a list of textbooks or both.

    • 3). Conduct a minimum of 180 days of instruction per academic year, each day four hours and 30 minutes or longer in duration, excluding breaks covering the required academic subject areas.

    • 4). Maintain detailed records in a diary or plan book that list daily activities and subject areas studied.

    • 5). Create a portfolio with samples of your child(ren)'s academic work.

    • 6). Create a semiannual progress report for each subject area that details attendance and learning progression.

    • 7). Ensure your home school organization sends a report to your municipal school district that includes your child(ren)'s grade level and total number of home schooled members in the organization by January 30 each year.
