Regarded as one of the most widespread world religion, Buddhism In India was founded by Buddha Shakyamun, also known to us with name Gautama Buddha, it was founded in the 5th century of B.C. Since its founding it has been widely accepted by people all over the world.
The teachings of Buddha purpose as found through learning of Buddhism In India, is to provide a better path of life by removing life poisons from one's life, poisons like anger, delusion and desire. This is achieved through development of higher trainings of concentration, discipline and transcendental knowledge. The tracings of Buddha can be found in the three Pitika or Tripitika, these are Vinaya-pitaka, Sutra-pitaka and Abhidharma-pitaka. The Vinaya-pitaka is a collection of discipline teachings, with which one can learn bring discipline in his life. The Sutra-pitaka is a collection of discourses delivered by Buddha and his close disciples. The Abhidharma-pitaka is a collection of abhidharma or metaphysics which guide us about how various things happen in life, what the reason behind them. Now we will see the early development of it in various regions of India, some of which are not part of India anymore.
The development of Buddhism In India can be traced back to early years of 5th century of B.C, there are many ways to represent its growth in country, but in short it can be classified in four phases; The Phase Of Early Buddhism, The Phase Of Interpretations Of The Teachings, The Phase Of The Rise Of Mahayana Buddhism, The Phase Of Buddhist Tantra. During the first phase the Buddha spread his teachings among his disciples, who then preserved it for coming years. In the second phase the divisions of schools based on the teachings of Buddha occurred, Hinayana Buddhism which later on also sub-divided into eighteen schools. It teachings mainly includes guidance to the path of salvation of one's soul. The third phase which was developed during the time period of great masters such as Asanga, Vasubhandu and Asanga, occurred with its two sub schools Chitamattra and Madhyamaka. The fourth phase started with tibet and was kept hidden from public.
The decline of Buddhism In India shortly after its spread in Asia occurred around 13th century, during which it became nearly extinct. Before it become nearly extinct, around 3rd century it was spreading among people of various countries outside India, adjusting to their culture and different conditions of these Asian countries. The starting country was Sri Lanka, then other courtiers followed, some of these are Indonesia, Korea and China. The decline of it can be blamed to many of Emperors who bring destructive activities to it culture. Still, it found a way to reestablished itself in different part of India by many schools of Tibetan Mahayana-Vajrayana Buddhist schools in the later years. Several of its sites have become major tourist attraction for people all over the world. Its sites that are spread all over India, Nepal are well preserved till date, you will also find many monastery where people still follow Buddhist religion through their life.
