- Seizure disorders in dogs can be due to their breed, heredity, and stress. A combination of these can play a part in developing the disorder.
- The amino acid taurine has shown promise in preventing seizures in dogs. Dogs cannot make this amino acid on their own so supplementing with 500mg per 25 pounds of dog once per day may be key in keeping seizures at bay.
- Vitamin C, E, selenium, and B6 can also be beneficial for your dog. A 50-pound dog would receive 500 mg of vitamin C two times each day, 400 I.U. of vitamin E once per day, and 50 mg of B6 each day.
- Some breeds are more prone to seizures, including poodles, miniature schnauzers, beagles, cocker spaniels, German shepard's, golden retrievers, dachshunds, Saint Bernard's, Irish setters, and wire-haired terriers.
- Once a dog has been diagnosed with a seizure disorder, keeping its surroundings as stress free as possible will help limit stress-induced seizures.
- If you see a dog having a first-time seizure, it is important to take it to the veterinarian so that a proper diagnosis can be established.
