Date of the Next Yukon Election
Yukon does not have set dates for general elections.
With a majority government, Yukon elections are usually held every three to five years.
The last Yukon general election was held on October 11, 2011.
How Yukon Election Dates are Decided
The Premier decides when he or she wants an election and asks the Yukon Commissioner to dissolve the Legislative Assembly.
According to the Yukon Act a Yukon Legislative Assembly can last a maximum of five years from the return of the writs (the official confirmation of the results of a general election) until dissolution. The date of the return of the writs for the 2011 Yukon general election was October 17, 2011.
The Yukon Legislative Assembly can also be dissolved if the government loses a non-confidence vote in the Legislative Assembly triggering an election. This could happen quite easily if there were a minority government.
The Commissioner of the Yukon also has the power to dissolve the Legislative Assembly.
