How to Layer a Photograph

    • 1). Run Photoshop or another photo-editing software such as GIMP or Google Picasa. Double click on to the desktop icon or click "File" then "Run" to launch the program.

    • 2). Open the photograph that you want to layer by clicking "File" then choosing "Open" from the drop-down menu. Browse your computer and find your photograph then click the "Open" button.

    • 3). Use the select tool to select a part of your photograph that you want to bring onto a new layer.

    • 4). Click "Edit" then choose "Copy" to create a copy of the selected segment. Then click "Edit" followed by "Paste" and the copied part of your photograph will appear on a new layer.

    • 5). Adjust the new layer. Experiment with your new layer by applying different adjustments. Try using different filter effects or adjusting the contrast and opacity of the layer.

    • 6). Repeat the process of copying and pasting segments to layer your photograph. Alternatively you can work on a new blank layer by clicking "Layer" then "New Layer."

    • 7). Turn your different layers on and off by checking the "Eye" symbol next to each layer in the layers window.
