How to Use Bobbers to Catch Trout

    • 1). Set up your trout rig with a bobber. Add a bobber stop to the main fishing line, and then attach a small bead. Follow the small bead with a weighted slip bobber, and then fasten a power swivel below the bobber. Tie 2 to 3 feet of 4- to 6-pound fluorocarbon leader to the power swivel. Attach a hook at the end. Use a tube jig lure with a 1/16- to 1/32-ounce jig head in colors of white, pearl, smoke, chartreuse, lime green, pink or orange.

    • 2). Cast the rig into your favorite trout waters. Adjust the bobber to the desired depth and let it float on the water surface while dangling the lure to entice trout. Suspend the tube jig 3 to 4 feet below the surface in shallow water, or 5 to 10 feet in deep water. Add a split shot above the power swivel if you prefer to sink the lure faster.

    • 3). Apply a jigging motion with a combination of dance action and retrieval. Reel the rig slowly for a few cranks, and then give your rod a jerk upward or sideways. Change the jigging direction to make the tube jig appear as if it is a moving minnow.

    • 4). Wait for the fish to bite, and then retrieve. Bites are easily detected when the bobber starts moving frantically and dips below the surface.
