- 1). Sketch an outline to begin. Use a reference photo if it helps. The photo doesn't need to be a cartoon. As you sketch the outline of the person you're drawing, enhance features such as the nose, eyes and mouth so they resemble the person but in an exaggerated style, much like a caricature.
- 2). Draw details on your cartoon person. Since you're drawing a simple cartoon, there's no need to worry about deep shading or dimension. The outlines you draw are the key to your cartoon. Use geometric shapes such as a circle for the head, an oval for the body and rectangles for the legs to sketch the basic layout of your cartoon figure.
- 3). Concentrate on drawing the face with funny features. Draw the eyes crossed or enlarge the nose. Sketch the mouth as a lopsided grin. A funny face isn't necessary for a cartoon sketch, but adding funny features to the face can help enhance the humor of the drawing.
- 4). Erase your shapes as you develop the curves and other elements of the body. Draw the body out of proportion to the head. A bigger head can help add a cartoon effect to the image. Lengthen the arms a bit and draw bigger feet.
- 5). Color your cartoon with color pencils, using bright colors. It's not necessary to worry about different shades, since you want to produce a simple look. The brighter and darker the colors are, the more cartoon-like your drawing will be.
