Our bathrooms are always getting visits for very obvious reasons.
The water and the smooth surfaces however can make these visits into very dangerous ones.
The hard countertops and the smooth floors can be real hazards.
This is more so for the children, the elderly and the disabled.
There are so many dangers in the bathroom that we can avoid and there are some adjustments that we can make to make the bathroom safer than it currently is.
The bathtub and the toilet can be very dangerous for example if a child or an elderly person should fall into it head first.
They can drown in the water that we think is so little.
You will need to child proof the bathroom.
The small child should not be able to open the lid on the toilet and should not be able to climb into the tub on his own either.
When it comes to the elderly, you can out railings or benches in the tub for them to have something to hold and to sit on.
Scalding from hot water is one of the injuries that we hear so often about.
A sudden jet of hot water can shoot out from the sink taps or the shower head and scald you.
Jumping away from the scalding water on reflex can also then lead to slipping and falling in the bathroom.
The best practice should be to always check the water first before jumping into the shower or just opening the tap all the way onto you.
Sticky mats or decals on the ground are a good way to solve your problem of no traction on the smooth floors of the bathtub.
These should be replaced regularly and kept dry.
You should also put some absorbent rags near the sink and shower to keep the floor dry.
