Is your Yorkshire terrier frustrating you? Let's face it, your Yorkie is small and so cute but when he won't listen to your commands he can stop being the cute little dog you desire him to be.
Most dogs are housebroken by the age of 6 months.
If your Yorkie is still having accidents well beyond his 6 months, here are 8 simple tips on housebreaking a Yorkshire terrier.
1.
First and foremost, eliminate any distractions.
Training your Yorkie should be between you and him and no one else.
Focus on one command at a time because Yorkies are easily distracted.
2.
Dogs like children benefit greatly by a strict schedule.
A consistent routine will enhance the housebreaking process.
3.
Use an authoritative tone when giving each command.
Using the same command like "Go" your Yorkie will associate that word and take action.
Going on cue is what you are training him to do.
4.
Confining your dog to a kennel or small space is also very beneficial for your Yorkie when you are not around.
Dogs simply will not soil the area that they sleep in.
It also teaches them patience and control.
5.
As soon as you hear him move around in his small area, take him out immediately so that he can relieve himself.
Reward his success with praise as soon as he is done with his business.
Use a small treat as your Yorkie will associate this with his good behavior.
6.
First thing in the morning and the last thing at night are two of the most important times of the day for your Yorkie.
Night time is especially important because small dogs have small bladders and less control to be able to make it till morning.
7.
Maintain a clean kennel or small area at all times.
If the smell of urine is in this area he will assume that this is his bathroom area.
8.
Restricting his freedom, being patience and consistence is important when training all small breed dogs, especially when it comes to housebreaking.
