How to Convert to Portable MP4

    • 1). Check the manual for your portable media device to determine if it supports H.264 playback. If the manual is not available, search for the device online; H.264 playback, if available, will most likely be listed among the device's features on the manufacturer's webpage.

    • 2). Download HandBrake (for DVD conversion) or FFMPEG (for other video formats) from their respective websites. Both applications are available at no cost for Windows, Macintosh and Linux.

    • 3). Launch the application and select the source video you wish to convert for your portable media player.

    • 4). Choose H.264 MP4 if your video player supports H.264 video and you do not mind a longer wait for the converted video. Otherwise, select standard MP4. Most video players support video widths of 320 pixels; if your player can play a higher resolution, select it from the drop-down list.

    • 5). Click the "Convert" or "Encode" button.

    • 6). Synchronize the resulting MP4 file with your video player.
