- It is easy to turn a good meal into a bad one when piling on the condiments. A salad is a good choice, but not with too much dressing. Italian dressing is about 70 calories per tablespoon, according to the Nutrient Facts website. Since most people use more dressing than that, it is easy to make that salad high in calories. Ketchup has 15 calories per tablespoon, barbecue sauce has 10 calories per tablespoon, and mayonnaise has 60 calories per tablespoon. Avoiding these extras will decrease the number of calories consumed.
- A set of measuring cups and spoons is relatively inexpensive and a must-have for healthy eating. It is not difficult to overconsume foods like cereal, sugar or fruit juice when attempting to "eyeball" the amount being used. Read the food labels for serving sizes, then carefully measure out that amount. This means having your favorites, but in limited quantities.

Healthy eating is made tougher by the thought that certain foods must be avoided. One trick is to have dessert out, but not keep it in the house. If you have to leave the house for a snack, you might decide on a better option already at home. But going out for a scoop of ice cream or a slice of cheesecake is still better than having it at the ready when a craving occurs. - Some restaurants have menus with icons that point out which items are considered the healthiest. Choosing one of these meals means dining out with less guilt. When cooking at home, make healthier versions. Use a sugar substitute rather than sugar. A whole large egg is 70 calories, while an egg white is 15 calories. Using the whites only for omelets and other recipes decreases calories, as well as fat and cholesterol. Some companies offer sugar-free, no sugar added, or low-fat food options that taste a lot like the regular versions.
