- 1). Locate your ceiling joists, by using a stud finder then mark them with tape or tacks.
- 2). Start your measurement for recessed lighting in one corner of your room by using a tape measure to measure 4 feet from one wall and 4 feet from the adjacent wall. Mark the ceiling where the two measurements meet. You may need to adjust this measurement by a few inches should it fall at a ceiling joist.
- 3). Locate the center of your first recessed light location and measure 4 feet from your first recessed light location to the center of your second recessed light location. Measure every 4 feet there after for general-purpose lighting.
- 4). Measure along your wall every 24 to 30 inches for a wall washing effect. Start from your corner and measure 24 to 30 inches from one wall and 24 to 30 inches from the adjacent wall, marking where these two measurements meet. You will only measure along the wall and not throughout the entire ceiling as you would with general lighting.
- 5). Start at your corner and measure 6 to 12 inches from one wall and 6 to 12 inches from the adjacent wall and mark were those two measurements meet. For a wall grazing effect, start at your first location, and then measure 12 to 18 inches along your wall for each additional light location.
- 6). Measure for recessed accent lighting. Locate the center of your object you wish to accent and measure from the wall above the center of the object and mark your light location 18 to 24 inches from the wall.
