- 1). Work a 4-inch layer of compost into the bed before planting the bird of paradise plant. Spread the compost over the entire planting site in an even layer, then turn it with a power tiller or spading fork. The compost provides nutrients and improves the quality of the soil.
- 2). Sprinkle 1 lb. of a granular slow release fertilizer around each plant, 6 to 8 inches away from the base of the stems. Use a complete fertilizer blend, such as a 10-10-10 or 15-15-15 blend.
- 3). Apply the fertilizer four times a year, spacing the applications three months apart. Birds of paradise require ongoing fertilization to remain healthy all year in their tropical or subtropical climate.
- 4). Water the plant immediately following fertilization. Moisten the top 6 inches of soil so the fertilizer can begin dissolving, as plants can only absorb the nutrients from the fertilizer once the granules begin to dissolve.
