How to Draw an Oxcart

    • 1). Find some interesting oxcart pictures from around the world. Choose a simple traditional oxcart for your first drawing. Select several images showing a side view of the cart. Make sure it is detailed enough for use as a reliable reference. Place it near your work area so that you can quickly refer to is as you draw.

    • 2). Draw a line to indicate the ground. Draw a spot that represents the center of the wheel about two feet above the ground. Draw a line twice as long as the box of the cart from just above the wheel center to the ground line on an angle. Use this line as the bottom of the oxcart box as well as for the wooden beam that comes out from the box and connects to the ox harness. Note that without the ox, the end of the beam is lying on the ground, tilting the entire cart. For depth, draw the box at an angle that shows two sides of the oxcart.

    • 3). Draw the outline of the box on top of the wheel-center line. Draw the box so that its length is equal on either side of the wheel. Use a compass to draw a circle to represent the wheel. Draw the wheel big enough so that the top is at the halfway point of the box height.

    • 4). The box should extend on both sides of the wheel by about half the diameter of the wheel. Draw the wooden beam that extends from the front of the oxcart. Make it at least one and a half times as long as the box on the oxcart.

    • 5). Texture the wood, and draw the lines between the planks used to construct the oxcart. Draw a line around the outside edge of the wheel to indicate the steel band around the slats of wood that make up the inside body of the wooden wheel. Draw these parallel lines in a different direction from the ones on the box to show that the wheels turn.

    • 6). Shade the dark areas of the oxcart, and add simple items like a few blades of grass underneath the cart to give it some scenic quality. Use the eraser to clean up any unwanted errors or smudges.
