- 1). Calculate the mileage that you use when driving the car you've leased for work. You cannot include driving from your home to work. Instead, calculate the mileage that you drive between job sites in your home tax city or county, between your office and the location of a meeting, to visit clients or when traveling to a temporary workspace, whether it is in or out of your home tax area.
- 2). Calculate the miles that you use on overnight business trips.
- 3). Figure out how many miles you've driven in the past year. Determine what percentage of that was business travel by looking at the mileage you accumulated at work in Steps 1 and 2.
- 4). Multiply your lease payments for a year by the percentage that you used the vehicle for work-related driving. This is the amount that you can deduct on your taxes.
- 5). Remember that you can also deduct car-related expenses like gas, oil and maintenance using the same method.
