- 1). Moisten seed starter by misting or mixing in a bowl with a little water. The mixture should be damp but not wet. Fill the pot to within one-half inch from rim with seed starter.
- 2). Check the back of the seed packet or consult a planting chart (see resources) to determine the proper depth to plant the seed. As a rule, plant seeds two to three times the height of the seed.
- 3). Make an indentation in the soil with your finger or the tip of a pencil.
- 4). Drop the seed into the hole and cover with soil. Pat the soil down lightly with your hands to remove air pockets and settle the seed.
- 5). Water to moisten the seeds, and cover the pot with plastic food wrap to maintain moisture and prevent soil from drying.
- 6). Place the pot in a warm location until the seed germinates.
- 7). Check the pot daily and keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid soggy soil. Examine for excessive moisture or signs of mold on the soil. Plastic should be foggy, but should not be dripping with large droplets of water. Open the plastic to allow water vapor to escape and soil to dry if excessive moisture is a problem. Punch several small holes in the plastic and cover the pot once the moisture is under control.
- 8). Move the pot to indirect light near a sunny window once seedlings emerge.
