How Long to Leave Pressure Treated Wood Out Before Painting?

    Before Installation

    • If you paint treated lumber that has already been installed, then there are several necessary procedures to follow before proceeding. Check the moisture content of the wood using a moisture meter. These meters can be purchased from most hardware stores. By inserting the meter prongs into the wood at various locations along the lumber, you can get an accurate reading; less than 8% moisture is an acceptable amount of moisture. If the lumber has greater than 8%, then cover the material with plastic. Place 2-by-4 lumber perpendicular to the direction of the treated lumber, spacing the lumber 24 inches apart. Place the plastic over the lumber spacers, which will allow air to flow under the plastic while keeping rain off.

    Preinstallation

    • Stack treated lumber in a stack if you have not installed it yet. Place 2-by-4 spacers between the boards as you increase the stack higher. The 2-by-4s will allow air to flow in between the treated lumber. Cover the treated lumber stack with plastic, and allow it to set for 48 hours. Check the moisture content with a moisture meter.

    Priming After drying

    • After the treated lumber has dried, paint with an exterior primer. Apply two coats of primer, allowing 30 minutes drying time between coats. Restack and cover the lumber once again to allow the materials to adjust to the climate in which they will be installed.

    Painting

    • Apply paint onto the lumber slowly, allowing the paint to fully soak into the treated lumber pores. Applying several coats will seal the lumber and prevent water and moisture infiltration. Once the paint and primer cracks, moisture may enter and cause the lumber to expand. Pay attention to lumber and paint cracks. If you find any, apply primer and paint.
