- 1). Open GIMP. Open both of your images by selecting "File," "Open." Navigate to your image and select "OK." Repeat for the second picture.
- 2). Highlight the image you want to use as your base image, or the image on the bottom. From the top menu select "Layer," "New Layer." Under "Layer Fill Type" select "Transparency."
- 3). Highlight the image you want to be on top. Select the whole image; click "Edit" from the top menu then "Copy." Go back to the base image and select "Edit," "Paste." Select "Layer," "Anchor Layer." This will be anchor the newly pasted image to the transparent layer that you created.
- 4). Shift the transparent layer until it covers the portion of both images you want to blend. This may just be the sides of each image, or it may be the whole image. Right-click on the transparent layer in the "Layers" panel. Select "Add Layer Mask." Choose "White (full opacity)" for the type. Click "OK."
- 5). Select the "Gradient" tool. Use it to select the portion of the image you want to blend. Hit "Edit," "Undo" to try again. The gradient should be dragged across the length of the two images.
- 6). Click "Image," "Flatten Image" to combine all the layers. Save or export your image.
