Interactive Games for Study Skills

    Focus Flash Cards

    • Teaching students how to focus on their studies while being able to work quickly allows them to maximize their study time. Create a series of double-sided flashcards of simple geometric shapes such as circles, triangles, rectangles, squares and pentagrams. Make 10 cards of each shape, and then shuffle the cards together. Show the cards one-by-one to the student, and have him tell you if the card he is currently looking at matches the previous card in the deck. A third person records how many times the player correctly identifies the shape while keeping time. Record the time and number of correct answers, and then have the player go through the cards again in an attempt to improve on his time and score.

    Memory Matrix

    • Training with spatial recall can help improve a student's memory and attention to detail. Create a deck of tiles using blank note cards. On some of the tiles, draw a large black X while leaving the other tiles blank. Arrange the tiles in columns of four-by-four. Using the tiles with the X, create a pattern that can be memorized. Show your player the pattern, and then turn the card with the X over so all of the cards are blank. Have the player uncover the tiles one-by-one until she has revealed them all. Rearrange the pattern to include more black Xs to remember, and have her play again. Add additional rows of tiles, with more complex patterns of black Xs, to increase difficulty.

    Brain Shift

    • Students with effective study habits can shift between subjects while still staying focused. Write a single digit number and either a constant or a vowel on 26 separate note cards. Show the player one card at a time while alternating which hand holds the card. Instruct the player to identify if the letter on the card is a vowel on cards held by your left hand and to identify if the number is even on cards held by your right hand. A third person records how many times the player correctly answers while keeping time. This game will help the player improve his ability to shift between subjects while staying focused at the task at hand.

    Rain Drops

    • A flash game from Luminosity, Rain Drops requires players to solve the equation in the rain drop before it reaches the water at the bottom of the screen. If the rain drop reaches the bottom the water levels rises and if the water level reaches too far, the game is over. Rain Drops requires the player to recall basic principles of mathematics while focusing on multiple equations. The purpose of the game is to increase the player's ability to quickly remember previously learned information in the required time limit. Improving a student's ability to remember information under pressure will aid her while taking tests and quizzes.
