    Coast to Coast

Crossing the U.S. from coast to coast is a lifelong dream for many vacationers. Travelers with at least two weeks to spend, who don't mind a lot of time on the road and who are primarily interested in sightseeing and socializing with traveling companions can pack in as many as three different states a day on some trips.

U.K.-based travel company American Sky breaks up its 16-night Great American Crossing with daily visits to attractions and a few two-night stop-overs. The tour visits key American cities, National Parks and natural wonders and has two-night stop-overs in Chicago and Washington DC.

    Regional Tours

Instead of trying to cover vast areas, some travelers prefer to spend a week to 10 days in one region. Taking in just two or three U.S. states, gives them more exposure to local customs and more time to sample regional food and drink. Regional trips may also involve less time on the road and more time to see the best attractions.

U.K. company Just America, arranges U.S. coach tours with Tauck World Discovery and APT World Discoveries. Their selection includes a comprehensive list of eight to ten day regional escorted tours. Their eight-day Charleston/Savannah escorted tour visits historic sites in Georgia and South Carolina with stops at gardens, historic urban districts, antebellum mansions and Atlantic Coast barrier islands.

    Theme Tours

Vacationers seeking specific experiences can plan a coach tour to the U.S. around a theme or activity. Coach tours organized around specific themes might take in big cities or small town America, music festivals and theater, autumn foliage or seascapes. Coach tours planned around activities might range from baseball or golf to regional cooking classes and scenic photography.

Global Coach Tours, another U.K.-based company, teams up with local tour operators on two to 23-day U.S. trips, many with a strongly themed itinerary. The Route 66 tour they offer, together with travel company Cosmos, follows this iconic American highway from Chicago to Los Angeles. The tour visits deserts, canyons, cowboy towns and glamorous cities along what the company terms "America's Main Street."
