- 1). Use a medium grit sandpaper to sand the edges of all of your wood pieces for your sparrow's birdhouse.
- 2). Use a compass to draw a circle measuring 1-1/5 inches in diameter on one of your 4-by-9 inch pieces. This size hole is appropriate for the general size of any type of sparrow. The right size hole is important in ensuring the sparrow can fit inside the house. Use your drill to make a pilot hole in the center of the circle. Then, using a jigsaw, cut the remainder of the hole out. This will be your entrance hole. Use sandpaper to smooth the edges. This piece will be the front of your birdhouse.
- 3). Place your 4-by-4 inch base piece on your work surface. This will be right side of the sparrow's house. Place the front piece of the birdhouse on the base so that it is perpendicular and flush with the edge. Use a hammer and nails to attach the two pieces together. Hammer through the base piece and into the front piece, using three nails, equally spaced.
- 4). Place a second 4-by-9 inch piece on the base piece so that is perpendicular to both the base and to the front piece. This will be the left side of the house. Make sure the edges are flush to both the base and the front. Use four nails to attach the front and the side piece together. Use three nails to attach the base to the side piece. Attach the other two 4-by-9 inch pieces together in the same manner, until all four walls and the base are connected.
- 5). Place the top of the sparrow's birdhouse (the second 4-by-4 inch piece) on the constructed base walls. Place the top so that its sides are flush with the rest of the birdhouse. Attach the two 1-inch-wide hinges 1/3 and 2/3 of the way across the top piece using screws, and then attach the hinges to the back piece. This will allow you to open your birdhouse to clean it if necessary.
