- 1). Take public transportation. Cities with congestion zones almost always have an alternate way to travel through the congestion zone without having to pay the fee for driving. Consider a bus, a subway or a bike. In some congestion zone areas, motorcycles and other two-wheeled vehicles won't be charged, either.
- 2). Log on to the transportation website for the city with the congestion zone you're trying to avoid. Cities with congestion zones should have maps explaining the times that the fee is charged and the area it's charged in.
- 3). Plan a route to your destination that uses only the free roads indicated in the map.
- 4). Drive to your destinations through the congestion zone during times that the congestion fee isn't charged. During these times, it's not a congestion zone because it isn't treated differently than any other road. Some examples in London include Christmas Day through New Year's Day.
