- If you buy a Microsoft product from a retailer, it will come with a Full Packaged Product license. This is the license typically used by home users and some small businesses with only one or two computers. The license never expires, but it can only be used on one computer.
- The Original Equipment Manufacturer's (OEM) license is purchased and used by computer hardware manufacturers, and allows them to pre-install Microsoft products on all of their computers, prior to sale. When you buy a computer with a Microsoft operating system pre-installed, the computer will have a sticker somewhere on the case, with the license key, proving that the product is genuine.
- Volume licenses are typically purchased by large organizations which are continually adding new computers and upgrading the software on existing computers. The volume license is a single license which allows the purchaser to install the software on a number of computers, depending on the number of licenses specified in the volume license agreement. Licenses purchased under a volume license are offered at a discount price.
