- 1). Create an XML document using any basic text editor like Notepad, or any XML editor. A link to a list of XML text editors is included in Resources.
- 2). Validate your XML file if you are using an XML editor or other specialized editor. This will ensure that your XML code is in the right syntax and will display properly. If you're using a basic text editor, you will not have the validation feature. However, once the XML file is displayed your browser will return error codes if there are any anomalies in the XML syntax.
- 3). Save your XML document by choosing "File" and "Save As." You can also click the "Save As" button from your toolbar. Be sure to save your XML document with the .xml file extension or your XML file will not run.
- 4). Open an Internet browser to run your XML file. Most browsers are .xml compatible, but some browsers translate XML files differently and offer different functions.
- 5). Choose "File" and then "Open File" if you are using Mozilla Firefox. This will allow you to navigate to the location where you saved your .xml file. For Internet Explorer and other browsers, right-click the XML file in Windows Explorer and use the "Open With..." command to open the .xml file.
- 6). Highlight the .xml file you want to run and select "Open." Close your Internet browser once you are finished viewing the output from your XML file.
