A tag line is a short sentence or phrase that is attached to a company or product. It is designed to make the product or company memorable to customers. In many cases a good tag line can help customers associate the company with the products they make, or they can help the company create an atmosphere associated with their name. For example, Allstate Insurance has the tag line "You're in Good Hands," which aims to establish a reliability with their insurance. Customers can then associate the product of reliable insurance with Allstate. - Part of creating a good tag line is studying what others have already done to help trigger your own imagination. But when you are considering the final product it needs to be original. If you create a tag line that sounds like a derivative of another company's slogan then you are helping to bring attention to that company and causing your company to look like an imitator.
- Customers need to be able to associate your tag line with your company or product. Creating a catchy phrase that has nothing to do with your company will only confuse customers. Try out your ideas on friends and family before coming to a decision. If your friends and family do not see the correlation between your tag line and your company then it will not work with the general public.
- As you are brainstorming a tag line idea there may be dozens or even hundreds of ideas that come to your head. You need to write every one of them down. While you may not like any of your ideas as they stand, when you see them in a list on paper you may notice a combination of ideas that will be your final tag line.
- Your tag line should focus on the part of your company or product that would best appeal to customers. For example, the Nike slogan of "Just Do It" is aimed at active customers that would need to buy Nike apparel to engage in outdoor activities. Determine what it is about your company or product that would motivate your customer base. Target your customer base with your tag line but make it broad enough that it could appeal to others, as well.
