- Harvard College has over 400 student organizations on campus. Students do not have to major in the specific subject area connected with the club they want to join. Students can join clubs in such areas as ROTC, arts and music, drama and dance, media and journalism, intramural sports, community programming, environmental and cultural activities, and government and politics. Activities for each club range from weekly meetings to on- and off-campus performances. For example, a student in the music club may join the one of the vocal ensembles, one of the five orchestras or one of the many jazz concert bands. Participants in public service clubs may help with local community activities such as after-school tutoring and mentoring for local youth.
- Off-campus activities are a significant part of student life at Harvard College. For students who enjoy attending off-campus events, the college has a program for Harvard students called Outings and Innings, where students get a discount on tickets to Boston area events and attractions. Additionally, a popular off-campus hangout spot for Harvard students is Harvard Square. Students can choose from multiple places to eat, live entertainment venues, museums and special cultural events. Harvard Square hosts an annual Mayfair celebration in which students can participate in activities such as a charity haircut event and hot air balloon rides.
- Many students, alumni and fans of Harvard University enjoy attending athletic events. Harvard is a Division I college that offers 41 varsity sports for men and women. Harvard varsity sports include basketball, baseball, soccer, squash, football, wrestling and skiing. Harvard's club and intramural team activities include archery, badminton, bowling, boxing, cycling, ultimate Frisbee and jujitsu. The varsity sqaush and rowing teams often practice all year round and participate in competitions during academic breaks.
- During academic breaks, Harvard student clubs are extremely active. For instance, during the 2011 Spring Break, the Harvard Glee Club performed in Wichita, Kansas; the Harvard Kuumba singers started off their Spring Break tour at Harvard's Sanders Theater. In addition, in January 2011, Harvard College offered its first Optional Winter Activities Week. The week consisted of fun student-led extracurricular activities, academic tutorial programs and seminars that helped prepare students for the upcoming spring semester.
