- 1). Log in to the wireless access point as administrator. Although most wireless access points offer a Web-based configuration interface, the details depend on the make and model. For example, for a Linksys WRT54GS access point, launch a Web browser and navigate to the access point's Web address, which is 192.168.1.1 by default. Then, enter the administrator's password.
- 2). Open the configuration page for network encryption. For example, on a WRT54GS, click on "Wireless," then click on "Wireless security."
- 3). Select "WPA" (not WPA2) as the type of encryption for the network, and "TKIP" as the cypher to use within WPA. For example, for a WRT54GS, select "WPA Personal" from the "Security mode" drop-down menu, then select "TKIP" from the "WPA Algorithms" drop-down menu.
- 4). Enter a WPA passphrase of up to 64 characters, including letters, digits and punctuation. Computers will need to know that passphrase to join the wireless network.
- 5). Save your configuration changes. For example, on a WRT54GS, click "Save settings." At that point, the access point will be configured to use TKIP for network security.
